Neiliro vs OpenFamily

Updated September 2026 · OpenFamily v1.7.0, as published on openfamily.fr and GitHub

OpenFamily is the open-source, self-hosted family organizer from France: shopping lists, tasks, a calendar, weekly timetables, recipes, a meal planner, a budget and family profiles, AGPL-3.0, on your own server, free. Neiliro is the closest kin with different choices: also open source and AGPL, also one Docker container, but it runs as a hosted service too, what the family writes is encrypted in the browser, and money is a full ledger rather than expense tracking. Here is where they differ, honestly.

Where OpenFamily is the better pick

  • Recipes, the meal plan and the weekly timetable are the heart of your household admin — Neiliro has none of the three.
  • You already run Mealie, Grocy, Home Assistant or Nextcloud and want the organizer wired into them.
  • You want push notifications for appointments and chores.
  • Running a server is not a problem for you, and you want everything free — including a one-click install on a Windows machine.

Where Neiliro is

  • You don't want to run a server. neiliro.com runs it — backups, updates, certificates — and the self-hosted edition is still there if you change your mind: the export restores into it.
  • Privacy beyond "it's on my machine": what your family writes is encrypted where you type it, with a key the server never holds. OpenFamily stores plain rows — fine on a box in your cupboard, a question on anyone else's.
  • Money is more than expenses: accounts and transfers, who paid what, reconciliation to the cent, more than one currency.
  • The paperwork arrives by e-mail: the school, the landlord, the utility. A family mailbox turns a letter into a task.
  • Notes are documents, not posts: linked to each other, with versions and attachments.

Try Neiliro free for 30 days, no card: create your family, or poke around the demo first. Prefer your own server? The self-hosted edition is free.
